General
While Peter Evans will almost certainly not teach this course again, the following materials provided by Marcel Paret may be useful depending on overlaps in course syllabi.
Some activities are also generally applicable. For example, the Development Intuitions Worksheet could be a useful first-section activity for this course as taught by any instructor. Similarly, many of the articles for potential use in section could be broadly applicable.
Marcel's Worksheets and Activities:
Below are worksheets that I used in section. In most cases I would split students into small groups and have them work on them together. Whether or not we finished, they served as a good outline of the readings, and springboard for discussion in the following section.
- Development Intuitions Worksheet, group answer guide, and answer sheet: This exercise is designed to help students figure out how good their intuitions are in relation to a basic quantitative description of recent development patterns in the Global South. Worksheet is for students to record their individual answers, Group Answer Sheet is for each small group to record and turn in their “consensus” answers, and Answer sheet gives answers as of about 2007 (some might need to be updated).
- Embedded Autonomy and Comparative development worksheet and answer guide: Worksheet and answer guide covering concept of embedded autonomy and comparing development of East Asia, Brazil, and (to a lesser extent) Zaire.
- Chua Worksheet and Diagram: Worksheet covering Amy Chua's World on Fire, with questions and very nice diagram of her argument.
- Woods Diagram-Building Activity: Very nice group activity covering Ngaire Woods' The Globalizers, asking students to construct their own diagram of Woods’ arguments, providing key themes for them to incorporate.
- Pictionary review activity: We played Pictionary in section and it worked really well. I split students into three teams, and all three would draw at once on the board to see who could guess the clue first. File is list of clues/topics to use in Pictionary.
Potential Articles to Use in Section:
Provided by Marcel: I used the Rosenberg article below on "Reverse Foreign Aid" in section and it was great. I did not use the Strong article, but it could be useful. The "against Esteva" piece includes excerpts from a piece written by Peter, and is a useful counterpoint to the "anti-development" perspective.
